Bounceback, or just a blip?

Confidence in the UK economy among property and built environment (PBE) directors appears to have rebounded in January, according to a report from the IoD Property and Built Environment Group, on which Richard Nelson serves as an Ambassador.

Their PBE Directors Economic Confidence Index rose to -55 from -67 in December.

Their figures, gathered from IoD members in the construction and real estate sectors, seem to align with the Institute of Directors (IoD) overall Directors’ Economic Confidence Index, which rose slightly to -59 in January from -61 in December. (See the full IoD DECI report here.)

The detailed data show a big difference between respondents’ changing attitudes in construction versus real estate, with construction directors’ pessimism receding to -67 (rising from -75 in December) and real estate directors swinging nearly 20 points to -37 (up from -55 in December).

Despite these gains, however, cautious optimism may be required, as there are still quite a few headwinds to contend with, as the group previously reported last month.
